What Is Socially Responsible Investing?

Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) investing has certain risks based on the fact that the criteria excludes securities of certain issuers for non-financial reasons and, therefore, investors may forgo some market opportunities and the universe of investments available will be smaller. Sometimes called social investment or, if related to the environment, green investment, socially responsible investing (SRI) is a type of investment that is considered to be socially responsible or socially ethical due to the nature of the business in which the investment is being made. For example, rather than investing in a company that has a reputation for poor worker treatment, environmental pollution, or other unethical practices, a socially responsible investor would put their money into businesses that are prioritizing things like environmental sustainability or social justice. Often, the framework for selecting companies is based on ESG–environmental, social, and corporate governance criteria.
