What Does a Financial Planner Do?

A CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER (CFP®) provides a number of financial planning-related services, including:

  • Helping you to understand your income, how much money you need, how much money you should save, and how to set a budget;
  • Retirement planning services;
  • Investment services;
  • Insurance planning services, including planning for long-term care insurance and disability insurance;
  • Social Security planning services;
  • Tax planning;
  • Planning for education, home buying, and other future costs; and
  • More.

Note that in order to receive the CFP® designation, a financial professional must have passed a number of qualifying exams and must have worked for a certain number of hours in the industry before they can be called a CFP®. What’s more, a CFP® is a fiduciary, which means that they owe their clients a legal duty to act within the clients’ best interests; a breach of this duty could result in civil consequences.

What Is a Fee-Based Financial Planner?

A fee-based financial planner is a financial planner who gets paid through fees, but may also collect compensation in other ways, too. Types of fees that a fee-based financial planner might collect include a flat fee, an hourly fee, or a fee that’s based on the percentage of assets under management.

While a fee-based financial planner may primarily be paid based on fees, they may also be compensated through other sources. An example of this is collecting a commission, such as a commission on investment products that a client purchases. This is different from fee-only financial planners, who are barred from commission-based payments.
