While growing your money is something that takes strategy, skill, commitment, and has no guarantee, our team can offer you guidance and help you navigate the complicated world of financial planning.

What a CFP® Certification Really Means

When someone says that they are a Certified Financial Planner™, do you know what that term really means? What actually goes into getting a financial planning certification, and how is a CFP® different than other professional financial designations?

In order to become a CFP®, you must meet rigorous standards. First, there is the education requirement. The candidate who is seeking CFP® certification must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Then, the candidate must complete a number of courses within the area of financial planning. Next, the candidate must take the CFP® exam, which is 170 questions related to more than 100 financial planning topics. Finally, the candidate must have at least three years of professional experience in the industry to receive the CFP® designation.

As such, when you work with a Certified Financial Planner™, you know that you’re working with someone who is truly experienced and knowledgeable in their field. Do not work with someone who claims to be a financial planner but is not certified.

The Advantages of Working with a Certified Financial Planner™

There are many advantages of working with a CFP®, especially if you are at a point in your life where developing a financial plan for your future really matters (i.e. you just got married or had a baby, you need to start saving for your child’s education, you just inherited or otherwise acquired a large sum of money, it’s time to start saving for retirement, etc.). When you work with a CFP®, you can benefit from:

  • A variety of financial planning services, including retirement planning, insurance and disability planning, private wealth strategies, investment strategies, and more.
  • The knowledge that your CFP® has a fiduciary duty to act with your best interests in mind. This is a legal duty.
  • The assistance of the most qualified type of financial planner available. Not only are the criteria for becoming a CFP® rigorous, as explained above, but CFP®s are also held to strict professional and ethical standards.
